Reflection
This happiness and meaning project had a personal connection and discussed experiences close to me. The essay portion of it talked about my time in nature and the meaning that it gave me. During my freshman year I spent 3 months in the wilderness so nature and being outside gives me great pleasure and meaning. In my essay I discuss how it has influenced my life and still does. For the art piece, I made a scrapbook of pictures of my time and experiences in the woods. My inspiration behind this project was because this was such a pivotal time in my life and is going to be a time that continuously influences my life.
This study of different philosophies and meanings in people's lives has made me really appreciate the diversity of the world and what brings people meaning. I think we are always being influenced by our surrounding by our family, the food we eat, the language we speak. One of the things that brings me happiness is travelling and learning about new cultures and people. It is so extraordinary what brings people happiness and meaning. In the USA we need so much stuff to bring what most americans consider happiness. In third world countries a slightly bigger dinner or a great harvest brings. But what seems to spread universally is personal connections. These seem to bring people the greatest meaning and it spans the entire globe. In the film Harold and Maude their connections brought each of them so much happiness. I think that we create our own happiness as seen in Into the Wild, but when you have positive relationships, happiness and meaning seems closer to the surface.
How does nature influence others?
Does nature deprivation affect mental states?
Can nature still have a place in a world where everything seems to be in doors?
What about nature appeals to people so much?
Why is it being destroyed when it is so important to our survival.
